Badcock Home Furniture began in 1904 when Henry Stanhope Badcock, an immigrant from England, started his first store in Mulberry Florida.
In 1920, Wogan, Henry’s son, bought the Mulberry store from his father. Business grew and prospered until 1928 with the land boom/bust. It became very difficult to sell the merchandise Wogan had on hand. It was during this time that he developed the concept of the Dealer operation. He initially put merchandise on consignment in various stores throughout central Florida and agreed to share the proceeds if and when the merchandise was sold. He began selling merchandise through route salesmen who used small trucks to travel designated routes and sell to customers on credit, collecting on installments.
Over a period of time, the salesman’s routes along with the consignment of merchandise to other stores developed into the establishment of home furnishing centers to receive and sell only merchandise consigned from the W.S. Badcock Corporation. The Dealers were able to finance their accounts with support from the corporation. The principal of granting credit to customers was relatively unique at that time and was really the forerunner of the way most merchandise transactions are conducted today.
In 1930 at the height of the Great Depression, Fred Hudson Sr knew his growing business, in Connelly Springs, NC, needed some muscle. So he purchased a 1929 Ford AA truck and the very newest addition to the Ford line, the 1930 SVO truck. The SVO was the latest and greatest thing for Ford, going away from the smaller engine and axle size available in the A and AA models. The SVO came in a wide range of styles and came with a wide variety of features. Truck sales for Ford in 1930 hit the 200,000 mark for the very first time. The two trucks, were for use at the Hudson family general store business, in Connelly Springs, NC. Where they sold groceries, household goods, feed, hardware and yes furniture. The original store in Connelly Springs, NC is now the location of Lindy Hudson's Furniture, which is still owned by family members.
Hudson’s furniture, founded in 1981, 38 years ago, now with 17 stores across Florida, continues the proud traditions of the Hudson’s family, represented by the historic vehicles.
In 1945, Melvin and Lucile Baer founded Baer's Home Outfitters in South Bend, Indiana, based on one simple concept: offer customers famous brands that they can trust, quality craftsmanship and lasting designs at tremendous discounts. It was there, under their parents' loving guidance, where Jimmie, Allan and Bobby were taught the retail furniture industry at every level. While the family-owned company continued to prosper in Indiana, the Baer's Florida vision started, when Bobby moved to Florida in 1968 and opened the Dania store. The elder Baers and the rest of the family eventually settled in South Florida and moved the business along with them. Today, Bobby is CEO and Allan is President along with the third generation in top management positions. They run a furniture dynasty that now has fifteen showcases and two warehouses.
