It’s astonishing to think of all that’s changed since 1885, when J.J. Haverty founded Haverty Furniture Company in downtown Atlanta. Through the early years, as we spread to Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas and beyond, sales collectors were making their rounds by horse and buggy.
As a company, we’ve changed dramatically over the years. As of 1929, we’ve been a publicly traded company, and today we have over 100 stores in 16 states, serving millions of loyal customers.
In fact, the only thing more remarkable than all the things that have changed since the beginning is all the things that haven’t - our friendly service, affordable prices, and high quality furniture.

But what customers enjoyed most was the friendly, down to earth atmosphere – still present today. Mr and Mrs. W.A. Akins started the business as a General Store in 1922 and later began selling used furniture out of their living room next door. We have been proudly serving the community with money saving opportunities ever since.
OUR HISTORY
E.F. Akins and his son W.A. Akins came to "Dogtown" in the early 1920's. They purchased land and the building which still stands today, and they opened a general merchandise store. After World War II, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Akins began selling used furniture from the living room of their house next door. Eventually a furniture room was added to the general merchandise store. Since then, there have been many additions to the store, and it now consists of over 150,000 square feet. The Akins family now spans four generations and over eighty years of furniture experience in the "Dogtown" community.
In the late 1800s, a man named George Abernathy began his business career selling Singer sewing machines from farm to farm around his hometown of Bear Paw, North Carolina. Soon after, in the year 1890, he opened a commissary in the nearby town of Farner, Tennessee, after realizing the need in the area. Years later, George moved his business to Ducktown, Tennessee, and partnered with Mr. Carl Center forming the Abernathy and Center Mercantile Business. George and Carl sold a variety of merchandise ranging from nails and hardware to furniture and appliances. After George's death, his son Luther took over the family's interest in the business in an attempt to follow in his father's footsteps. As the business continued to thrive, Luther opened a secondary store in Copperhill, Tennessee, where he primarily sold furniture, dynamite, and hardware. Luther also operated a funeral parlor on the top floor of the establishment and sold caskets as well. During Luther's time in Copperhill, he created two business slogans: "Coffins, Caskets, and Dynamite" and "You Marry the Girl, We'll Furnish the Home." The second slogan, "You Marry the Girl, We'll Furnish the Home," is the slogan most well-known to our community and still stands today at Abernathy's Complete Home Furnishings.
